#1 Star Wars Artist Dave Dorman Releases New Art D-I-Y DVDs

Jay Cochran - May 14, 2008
Known to his colleagues as the “nicest guy in comics” and to his fans as the #1 Star Wars Artist, Dave Dorman is finally spilling his coveted, never-before-revealed trade secrets in his new two-DVD series, “Illustration Techniques with Dave Dorman” through Hollywood’s The Gnomon Workshop. Dorman, son of deceased Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Jack N. Dorman, has earmarked a portion of the DVD sales for the children of active military who want to attend Hollywood’s prestigious Gnomon School of Visual Effects (https://www.gnomon3d.com). “I remember how tight money was as a military kid when I was trying to get my art education,” Dorman explained. “If I can help even one family out, then something very good has come from this project.” The DVDs are available now at https://www.TheGnomonWorkshop.com, https://www.DaveDorman.com and in artist supply stores nationwide; Volume 1 (pencil illustration) is 120 minutes long and retails for $49.95; Volume 2 (traditional oil painting) is 140 minutes long and retails for $59.95.

Dorman attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland for one year before transferring to the Joe Kubert School of Comic Book Design in New Jersey. After a year at the new school with its limited curriculum, Dorman left and taught himself in the style of his idols, Frank Frazetta, Enki Bilal and Moebius (Jean Henri Gaston Giraud). “Those watching my DVDs will be surprised by my controversial and unorthodox techniques, such as mixing oils and acrylics, but you can do these things if you don’t have an over-opinionated art teacher looking over your shoulder telling you otherwise,” Dorman explained.

Dorman, who was voted by the fans as the #1 Star Wars Artist of All Time and who has sold George Lucas over 90 of his original oil paintings, won his Eisner Award (the Oscar of the comic book industry) for his work on Aliens: Tribes. His fans worldwide collect his work on Indiana Jones, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Batman, Captain America, G.I. Joe, World of Warcraft, Alien, Predator, and Alien V. Predator, Magic: The Gathering, King Kong, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and more. Dorman exhibits yearly at Comic-Con, the nation’s largest comic book and pop culture convention https://www.comic-con.org. Reviews for Dave Dorman’s DVDs:

All I can say about Dave is WHOA! I have always admired Dave’s skills and technique and to finally have a peek at how he does his magic is something every aspiring artist should be thankful for and should treasure for years to come. -- Stephan Martiniere, Creative Visual Director at Midway Games

Any person looking to illustrate the fantastic, arcane or bizarre, hoping to imbue their pictures with a believable sense of reality, need only look as far as David Dorman's art. From his energetic compositions, engagingly believable characters and superb detailing of unique designs to his masterful definition of form and movement, Dave's diverse artistic strengths add depth to whatever he portrays. I'll be first in line (pardon the pun) to buy this DVD (and the next and the next!) -- Michael Kaluta

Dave Dorman is a master illustrator. From his brilliant and dynamic compositions for Star Wars and Aliens to the sublime images for ‘The Wasted Lands’, Dave brings the very best of narrative storytelling to each and every painting. His prolific output and masterful style are testaments to his enduring fame and success as one of our greatest talents. Dave’s unerring classical draftsmanship, dizzying color balances, mind blowing collages, and warm professionalism insure this DVD will open to an electrifying world guaranteed to expand our artistic horizons. It is a rare treat to view an artist of this caliber working while we stand over his shoulder, rarer still to see it again, and again, and again, as we eagerly absorb his professional secrets!
