Reader Review: 30th Anniversary Biggs Darklighter (X-Wing Pilot) By Whitewolf

Bespin refugee - May 06, 2007
Biggs Darklighter...when you look at this guy, you just can't help thinking, "Wasn't this guy in Boogie Nights?" From his wind-swept hair helmet to his handlebar mustache, he just screams "70s adult film star." But he was Luke Skywalker's best friend and Imperial turncoat, so I suppose he's not so bad as a character. He provided adequate cannon fodder and just enough of a distraction for Vader so that Han could swoop in and save Luke's pasty butt...nope, not a bad character at all. I'll also be doing a review on Deleted Scene Biggs later this week, so stay tuned...

X-Wing Biggs is a bit of a disappointment in that he's nothing more than a kitbashed 2004 Dutch Vander (Gold Leader). The older date is even still on the bottom of his boot. The only difference here is that the head has been swapped for Darklighter's ugly mug. The first indicator of this being an older figure is the glaring lack of articulation. Only 2 ball-socket joints (in both knees) and 5 straight-cut joints in the shoulders, hips and in the right elbow. The figure was clearly sculpted to be stand-alone, since he's really only supposed to stand around looking heroic with his helmet under his right arm. Putting him inside an X-Wing is near-impossible, as was trying to wrench Dutch inside a Y-Wing. And apparently most of Red Squadron were nearly as tall as Wookiees, since he towers over VTSC X-Wing Luke by a good inch and a half. This figure is more at home in a "group photo" setting with other members of Red Squadron than in the cockpit of any snubfighter.

Now, not all is lost on this version of Biggs. The paint app is top-notch, with clean lines and not one bit of color bleeding. Biggs's helmet is tampo-stamped with his signature checkerboard grids on each side. Like Dutch Vander, Bigg's helmet includes a chin strap and small comlink mic. Rank cylinders are cleanly painted on his upper arm, as is are various belt buckles and greeblies on his life support chestbox. His boots and gloves are done in a gloss black, making them look like the vinyl flight gloves they used in the movie. That was a nice touch...

X-Wing Biggs comes with only two accessories. But you really can't load a second-banana pilot down with a truckload of stuff...

He includes:

*Removable Helmet
*DH-17 Blaster Pistol
*Collector's Coin #14

Overall, this is a nice "filler" figure if you are trying to accurately form the original Red Squadron from ANH. But due to the lack of articulation, this figure is not good for anything but standing. And I realize that Hasbro never intended to have a bunch of super-articulated X-Wing pilots. But choosing to resurrect this particular mold sort of leaves a bad taste on this reviewer's pallette...

I give the 30th Anniversary X-Wing Biggs Darklighter 2.5 Death Stars.
