Reader Review: 30th Anniversary Mace Windu by Whitewolf

Bespin refugee - April 08, 2007
Mace Windu...what could I possibly say about him that hasn't already been said before? When you look at him, you basically see what would have happened if Shaft up and decided to become a Jedi Knight. From the patented scowl to the trademark you-just-made-my-sh$t-list stare, the man absolutely drips coolness. His style and attitude is of such magnitude that he is the only Jedi to ever go against the established "green/blue for good guys and red for bad guys" dogma when it comes to lightsabers. Windu got his own purple blade complete with electroplated gold bling finish. Master Windu could teach Lando Calrissian a thing or two about being suave.

Play on playa...

Best...Mace...Ever...

I could probably sum the entire review up in those three words, but I won't. I will at least elaborate on why I say this. Hasbro went back to the drawing board and revamped Mace into his current super-articulated form, learning a lesson from the horrible previous versions. Gone is the "Crack Addict Mace" with his droopy eyes, disconnected expression and gaunt sunken cheeks. In his place is a new Mace Windu with a much-improved head sculpt that is as close to Samuel L. Jackson as Hasbro's sculptors could get without using 3D image scanning. The stern, determined gaze is very befitting the character. Mace features 10 (count 'em 10) ball-socket joints, allowing a full range of poses not possible in past versions of this figure. The figure is based on the super-articulated Obi-Wan Kenobi, so those who already own Kenobi will see several similarities between the two. The ball-socket in the neck seems to be a bit on the loose side, but I think that is just my particular figure and not representational of the entire production run.

The paint app is very clean on about 95% of the figure, with the exception of the knees just below the ball-sockets. They are painted with the same yellow paint that is used on Mace's undershirt collar, making them somewhat mismatched against the upper legs. Besides this slight production faux-pas, everything else is nicely done. His robes are one thing that I found to be a vast improvement over the tons of other robes that have been packed in with past Jedi/Sith figures. It is cut in such a way that it hangs to the sides of the figure, exposing the front of the figure as well as the legs...much like the costume robes do in the movies. Previous robes have always been overly bulky and are sometimes much too long, making the figure look as if it swims in them. Not this one...I can only hope that all future Jedi-style figures will have this new style of robe included with them.

Mace comes with a modest number of accessories, all of which are must-haves to round out the figure:

*Removable Jedi Cloak
*Purple-bladed lightsaber
*Removable Force Lightning (attaches to lightsaber)
*Aura of Absolute Coolness
*Collector's Coin #06

This is the Mace Windu we should have gotten back in 2005 with the ROTS line. The only thing that Hasbro could have possibly added to this figure to make him "Ultimate Mace Windu" is a removable right arm to simulate the moment when Anakin cut it off. Beyond that, this is nearly a perfect figure. I highly recommend scoring Mace if you come across him in your travels...he's well worth it.

I give Mace Windu 5 Death Stars
