Hasbro Talks Haslab & The Star Wars Vintage Collection Jabba's Sail Barge

Jay Cochran - March 22, 2018
Hasbro today held a special press event to discuss their Haslab crowdfunding project and the Star Wars Vintage Collection 3.75" scale Jabba's Sail Barge which is the first item being offered through the endeavor. At the event was Hasbro's own Joe Ninivaggi, Steve Evans, and Mark Boudreaux.

If you haven't been following along, back in February during Toy Fair Hasbro announced an ambitious project to offer a new monstrous 4ft long Star Wars vehicle for their recently relaunched 3.75" Star Wars Vintage Collection line. That vehicle being Jabba's Sail Barge (The Khetanna) from Return of the Jedi, which will be 49.35" long, 14.64" wide, 17.01" (To top of sails) in height and weight 13.89 lbs. Of course there is a catch. In order for Hasbro to actually move forward on this item and produce it, they need 5k people to back the project by April 3 through their Haslab crowdfunding website. This entails you paying $499.99 for the vehicle. As of today they have 3212 backers with 12 days to go.

Besides the Sail Barge itself you will also get the following for your $499.99.

- Classic Vintage Collection packaging with special limited edition HASLAB seal of authenticity

- Jabba's Sail Barge (The Khetanna): Behind the Workbench, a premium, 64-page booklet, that goes behind the scenes of the design and development of the actual Sail Barge film set piece and Hasbro toy. Complete with set photos, product blueprints, interviews, and more

- Jabba the Hutt 3.75-inch scale figure

- 3.75" Yak Face figure from The Vintage Collection in exclusive Power of the Force card back packaging with exclusive Collector Coin

So that brings us to today's press event which we have gathered the highlights for in tidy bullet points you can read below.

Press Even Highlights:

- Hasbro confirmed that if they do not reach the 5k backers by April 3 the Sail Barge will not happen, no matter how close they get.

- Regardless of whether this vehicle gets funded or not, Hasbro will continue the Haslab project with plans to expand it to other brands such as Transformers, Marvel and maybe even G.I. Joe. Basically any brand under the Hasbro umbrella could see products offered through this crowdfunding option. They also indicated that while we would likely only see one Star Wars item offered a year through Haslab, we could see multiple products offered at the same time for various brands.

- Not every item offered through Haslab necessarily has to be a big elaborate $500 item like the Sail Barge. We could see other smaller things offered that still might be difficult to get released through regular retail.

- Hasbro confirmed that the Sail Barge would only be offered to folks here in the United States and Canada through Haslab, which are the only people at this time who can participate in the crowdfunding project. They did state that plans were being made to find ways to offer the Barge in limited quantities for people outside the US and Canada IF it ends up getting funded through Haslab. In other words if they get their 5k backers for the Barge, folks outside the US and Canada can expect a way to still be able to purchase one for themselves beyond the secondary market.

- Hasbro said that they could not open Haslab up to people outside the US and Canada currently because they are not outfitted to be able to sell directly to those people. They do hope that will change down the road for future projects.

- Hasbro confirmed that the Yakface figure released with the barge will see a general release in 2019 with a Vintage Collection Return of the Jedi cardback. The figure will be the same, only the packaging will be different and you won't get the collector coin.

- The Jabba The Hutt figure is a re-issue of the one that came with the Rancor set, but the figure will have a new paint job.

They also took us through a walk-through of the massive vehicle. The lower deck includes a 2-pilot cockpit, Jail Cell with Hammerhead type prisoner which isn't really articulated, but sculpted in multiple parts. The figure is pegged to fit in the cell. The cell has a sliding door to let prisoners in and out and a trap door over top allowing figures from the deck above to drop in. Following the jail is a detailed Galley for preparing Jabba's meals, Armory filled with weapons and Lounge for Jabba to hang out in. It will have 3 access points from the bottom deck to the top and a figure can walk from the front cockpit all the way through to the back lounge, which will feature a wood-like deco.

On the top deck you have two sails that are removable. A large cannon and 3 smaller rail cannons that will have 6 different spots you can place them at on the rails.
