John Boyega Tells His Star Wars: The Force Awakens Critics To "Get used to it"
Jay Cochran - December 01, 2014
While overall responses to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer which debuted online last Friday seems to have been positive, it seems some critics were not happy with actor John Boyega who was seen wearing a Stormtrooper outfit at the beginning of it.
Boyega took to Instagram yesterday and provided a response to those critics with the following:
I have not followed much of the controversy behind the complaints these so called fans have had with Boyega. In fact I generally tend to ignore anyone who is going to form a hard set opinion about a movie one way or the other when so little information about it has been made available, but the general gist of it at least as far as those Boyega is addressing with his response is that they are unhappy with the color of his skin. Obviously Boyega is not the first black man to have a significant role in the Star Wars Universe, both Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Samuel L. Jackson (Jedi Master Mace Windu) had major roles in the past, so I am not really sure why anyone complaining about Boyega now would be taken seriously or be given the time of day. I have seen some fans who were confused, thinking that all Stormtroopers where clones of Jango Fett as portrayed in Episode II and III, not realizing that by the time the events of Episode IV rolled around the Empire had mostly replaced the Clone Troopers with soldiers from the general populace that they recruited and put through their Imperial Academy.
Obviously at this point we don't know if Boyega is playing an actual Stormtrooper in the new movie or is wearing the armor for some other reason, but either way I would certainly hope that anyone dumb enough to be upset simply because of the color of ones skin would be ignored for their ignorance and not given the time of day, because anyone that clueless really doesn't deserve the respect of being acknowledged as a true fan.
