Lucasfilm & EA Decide Against Movie Based Star Wars Games Moving Forward

Jay Cochran - November 21, 2013
Variety reports that a decision under Electronic Arts' new ten-year-deal with Lucasfilm to produce “Star Wars” video games, they will not be doing games on the upcoming new movies. Instead they will focus on the broader universe that makes up Star Wars.

Blake Jorgensen told attendees at the UBS Global Technology Conference on Tuesday. “The beauty of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise is that it’s so broad and so deep, you don’t have to do a movie game, you can do a game that’s very focused on the world that’s been created around ‘Star Wars.’”

He went on to say, “We struck what we believe is a fantastic deal which allows us to be able to build games in many different genres across multiple types of platforms over ten years and we’ll leverage the strength of the Disney marketing associated with the ‘Star Wars’ properties both in movies and other things that they may do over the timeframe,”

A new Star Wars: Battlefront game is currently being worked on by DICE, Visceral Games and BioWare for Electronic Arts which is expected to be released sometime in 2015 near the December 18th release date of Episode VII.

While EA will focus on tentpole type titles for console systems like Playstation 4 and XBoxOne, Lucasfilm and Disney Interactive have turned to other partners to produce mobile games such as we have seen with the recently released Angry Birds: Star Wars and Star Wars: Tiny Death Star.
