Hasbro Expands Relationship With Disney’s Lucasfilm, Extending Star Wars License and Adding New Deal for Indiana Jones Franchise - New Figures In 2023

Jay Cochran - January 26, 2022
Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS) today announced an extended relationship with Lucasfilm, renewing its longstanding licensing deal for Star Wars™, and announcing a new agreement to develop products based on the Indiana Jones™ franchise. As a master toy licensee for both franchises, Hasbro will continue to create toys and games designed to appeal to fans of all ages for the Star Wars franchise and is excited to start on designs for the Indiana Jones franchise. The Indiana Jones line by Hasbro will be available in the U.S. in 2023, aligning with the release of the highly anticipated new Indiana Jones feature film.

The two companies have a decades-long strategic merchandising relationship, as Hasbro has developed and manufactured toys and games for a variety of entertainment properties from Disney. In addition to the agreements with Disney with respect to the Lucasfilm properties, Hasbro announced a multi-year extension for the Marvel business in 2020 and is continuing its strong Marvel relationship with an impressive slate of upcoming content, products, and more. Hasbro’s collaboration with Disney continues to bring consumers opportunities to express their fandom in all new ways through Hasbro’s ever-expanding collections of licensed toys and games.

“We’re proud to deepen our close working relationship and collaborate with the Disney team to bring innovative and engaging play experiences to kids, fans, and families inspired by some of the world’s most iconic entertainment brands,” said Eric Nyman, Chief Consumer Officer, Hasbro. “In addition to a slate of new collectibles, figures, role play gear, and games for Star Wars and Marvel, it’s an honor to bring Indiana Jones back to Hasbro and help introduce the beloved franchise to a new generation of fans.”

“Disney has long valued its relationship with Hasbro in developing fresh, imaginative products and toys that delight our fans of all ages,” said Stephanie Young, President of Disney Consumer Products, Games and Publishing. “We’re thrilled to continue collaborating with this iconic company—one that will help lift our consumer experiences across the Marvel, Star Wars and now Indiana Jones franchises to new heights for years to come.”

The forthcoming Indiana Jones product line marks Hasbro’s return to the franchise; Hasbro last produced Indiana Jones toys in 2008, when Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released. Prior to that, Kenner, which is now part of Hasbro, made toys for the original Raiders of the Lost Ark film from 1982-1983.

Hasbro is proud to maintain a strong connection with Disney, the creator of some of the most celebrated and everlasting entertainment franchises and looks forward to continuing its storied relationship with new product lines for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Marvel and many more initiatives in the future.

Ah, thats good news. I didnt actually attend the SW panel so I had no idea Wicket was announced. Im used to just walking to the Hasbro booth an hour after the panel and figuring out what was revealed based on what was added to the display case but I guess with this new pipeline system that no longer works lol.

The catch with Indy is we have to expect that the majority of figures (especially at first) will probably be based on the new film. So even though there arent a ton of figures in that franchise it could still take awhile to get to the ones we want.

Do we know that Wicket and the Ewoks are coming? I dont recall hearing that. One would hope those might at the very least be in a ROTJ anniversary set but given how Hasbro has been so heavy on rereleases and repaints these past few years that anniversary set most likely will be rerelease focused thus just stuff like rereleases of Jedi Luke, Endor Han, Endor Leia, Palace/Skiff Boba, Emperor, Vader etcall things weve already gotten multiple times only this time on a retro style card back. That seems to be what Hasbro has been doing more often than not.

wicket is a no-brainer, super easy repaint since they already released teebo.

as for indy, how many figures do u guys honestly think are coming? i get ghostbusters vibes thinking about this line. like we'll get an indy 5 indy and raiders indy and maybe a pulse or con exclusive father/son last crusade set. itll be really cool if this line goes way deeper but idk

Wicket is smaller than Teebo, so he'd better not be a repaint. No clue how deep the Indiana Jones line is going to go, but again, as InspectorZartan had speculated, if the line is run like the Black Series, and it likely will be, it will focus heavily on the newest movie with a sprinkling of classic characters. I would also expect to see at least Indy from Raiders, TOD, Last Crusade, and Crystal Skull (along with Indy from Part 5), as the Black Series model clearly dictates releasing Luke Skywalker figures in every single look he's ever had in Star Wars.

Remember in 2019 when Hasbro ran a fan poll for ESB Black Series figures, Snowspeeder Wedge, Lobot, and the Surgical Droid were all leading, then the poll closed and Hasbro quickly announced that Dagobah Luke was the winner, complete with a render they coincidentally had ready to go, and years later we still have no sign of the runners up? Wicket, we at least know is on the way.At least there are fewer characters in the Indiana Jones franchise, so I would hope that would mean we wouldn't have to wait forever on Katanga and Kazin. Then again, we probably would.

Thats from the 90s Hasbro/Kenner era. Im talking about original vintage Kenner (pre Hasbro, 1978-1985)

Im excited for more Indiana Jones product but I have to be honest and say Ive become very disappointed with Hasbros handling of Star Wars product for awhile now (going back to even prepandemic). I dont know how much of it is Hasbros fault vs Lucasfilm but the choices for these lines (particularly Black Series) has been so lacking in inspiration that I kind of wish theyd either take a break for a year or two to reset things with new momentum (something that will likely never happen) or there were some type of a major shakeup that forces Hasbro or someone else to step up their game in order to keep/gain the license.

Enough with repaints, carbonized, credit collection, and holiday edition wave after wave. Enough with rereleased figures with slight updates. Enough with the only new figures being new media characters that a) most fans arent that excited about and b) even if they are the excitement for those characters has lost all momentum by the time the figures come out. Enough with the poor distribution and having 50% of the line be a store/online exclusive.

And if youre going to give us deep cuts in an increasingly expensive line like black series how about instead of some slightly variant trooper repaint from a video game we get some new sculpts of long beloved and wanted characters like Wicket and the other Ewoks or Hammerhead and the Cantina Aliens or Jabbas various Palace/Skiff aliens. At this point in the line we should have most of the Kenner figures in the line upwho was the last figure in the Black Series that was someone we could check off the Kenner list??? I honestly dont even remember any more.
