Regal Robot Star Wars Holochess Prop Replica Statue Preview

By Bespin refugee on 2021-04-06 in Action Figures

Regal Robot shares a first look at their amazing prop replicas that will be available on May the 4th!

The hand-painted, static resin replicas in our Dejarik™ sets are 1:1 scale to the actual puppets used in filming the stop-motion chess sequences in the Star Wars™ Saga and with lineage to those original puppets!

Our replicas were prototyped using the digital files that Phil Tippett’s team created in 2015, when they used 3D scanning and photogrammetry of original props used in Star Wars: A New Hope™ to accurately recreate the wildly imaginative creatures he and Jon Berg hand-sculpted in 1977.

Using these files, along with reference provided by Lucasfilm and never-before-seen photos which Phil had saved from 1977, our artists created incredibly detailed replicas, taking great care to maintain the integrity and lineage. We hope to share a bit more of that process in the coming weeks.

Our Holochess Prop Replicas will be available as follows:

DELUXE SIGNATURE EDITION 10 FIGURE SET – A very special edition, limited to 77 sets, includes two exclusive creatures and a hand-numbered plaque with three signatures by the FX legends that brought the scene to life.

FOUR, LIMITED EDITION TWO-CREATURE SETS – Four sets featuring the classic 8 creatures seen in the original 1977 film, including a dynamic “Body Slam” set of the two best-known characters! These will only be available to order from May 4th, 2021 through June 18th, 2021, at which point the editions will be closed and capped.

These amazing new replicas will be available to order starting May 4th, 2021 at 12pm EST. Both editions will be offered with extended Payment Plans via Partial.ly.

We’re excited to announce that the plaques for the Deluxe Set have been signed by the three legendary creators involved in the production of the original stop-motion Dejarik sequence: creature creators/animators Phil Tippett and Jon Berg, and miniature effects cinematographer, Dennis Muren.

“A few years back, I was at Tippett Studios working on a restoration project. At the same time, Phil’s team was preparing the holochess puppets for their stop motion work on Solo: A Star Wars Story™. As a kid, I was pretty obsessed with stop motion after seeing the making of Star Wars:The Empire Strikes Back™ and how the tauntauns were brought to life. I’d always been fascinated by the chess creatures, but seeing these incredibly accurate modern interpretations in person and feeling the heft and scale of the puppets… it was really something special. I asked about recreating those awesome creatures for our fans via Regal Robot and I was over the moon when Phil graciously agreed to share the digital work his team did for the modern era Star Wars films. It’s been 8 months since we started on this project and I am so excited to share this sneak peek at what we’ve been working on!” – Tom Spina (Regal Robot founder)

These will be available to order starting May 4th, 2021 at 12pm EST. We’ll be sharing more photos and details about these incredible replicas in the coming weeks, with the final details and full galleries going live on April 27th, 2020. Please check back often and join our email newsletter for updates or follow @regalrobot on social media for more news!

Thank you all for reading. We look forward to making these replicas for collectors looking to bring something unique and authentic to their homes! If you have any questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact us at any time!

For you trivia buffs, you probably know there were 8 holochess creatures shown during the scenes inA New Hope, but, did you know there were actually 10 sculpted?According to Phil Tippett, "We had made 10 characters George [Lucas] started placing them and then there just wasnt room for two of the characters, and so those got cut from the movie.

When Tippett and fellow creature animator Jon Berg returned for the holochess scene inSolo: A Star Wars, they brought back these "lost" creatures, "Bulbous:" and "Scrimp", as well. They digitally scanned the original props and put them into the film.

ThisDELUXE SIGNATURE EDITION 10 FIGURE SETwill be limited to just 77 numbered sets, with three signatures by the FX legends that brought the scene to life, creature creators/animatorsPhil TippettandJon Berg, and miniature effects cinematographer,Dennis Muren.
