Hasbro Star Wars Black Series And Other 6" Lines Price Hike For 2021?!?

By Jay Cochran on 2021-01-11 in Action Figures
With a new year upon us, it seems like the dreaded price increase for Hasbro's 6" action figure lines is also upon us as well. Earlier today we were treated to our first Marvel Legends pre-order for 2021, and with that many couldn't help but notice the increase in price from the normal $19.99 to $22.99.

I've been doing some checking, and while not officially confirmed by Hasbro yet, this price increase seems to be for all Marvel Legends releases as well as other 6" lines like Hasbro's Star Wars Black Series. I haven't checked on every single 6" line Hasbro does, or other scales of figures from Hasbro, so I can't say for sure how it will impact things like Power Ranger, G.I. Joe Classified or even smaller scale lines or things like Transformers. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see some kind of price hike all across the board.

From what I can tell you should expect to see prices increase with products seeing release around July time frame.

While seeing prices increase is never a good thing, it should also be noted that Hasbro has held off on increasing their prices for these things for several years, and truth is the prices only go up on these things, not down.

I also don't know what kind of impact these price hikes will have at the big box stores like Walmart and Target. Those stores often are given discounts the smaller guy doesn't get, just because they order so much more inventory, and they could likely take on a price increase without raising prices on the consumer, at least for a while just to try and thin out the competition. Small retailers don't have that luxury, so this kind of thing tends to hurt them more than the larger stores. We will have to wait and see how all this plays out.

I remember when you would go to pretty muchany store and buy toys. Seedmans I believe was the name of the store, I got so many GI Joes from there. Heck, I remember when I was a kid my mom got me a GI Joe figure from a Hospital gift shop. When the Teenage Mutant Turtles cartoon,I remember saving my allowance and going to Kaybee to buy Ninja Turtles toys and the pegs were full of them. Even mid 90s I would watch the Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Iron Man and X-men cartoon and go to the store and they would have action figures from those shows.

It was so easy when you could just see a commercial for a toy (or not) and then just walk into Toys R Us and see shelves and shelves of Star Wars, GI Joe, etc. Pre-internet, bots, pandemics, quarantines, and all the other stuff, the hardest part back then was getting mom and/or dad to say yes.

And price hikes? Forget it! I remember the 90's. The Marvel cartoons were all over the airwaves, and Toybiz was pumping out so much product, literally two weeks after a new wave would get released, it would be on clearance at Toys-R-Us just to make room for the next batch.

God, I loved those clearance baskets, sometimes the figures even still had traces of the packing tissue on 'em.

Tell me about it. As kids spending our allowances on G.I. Joes, we never had any concept of the hundreds of roadblocks we would face as adult collectors . . . and that's not even counting pandemics, quarantines and shutdowns.

So between the exclusives, bad distribution and scalpers getting worse I'm collecting less and less.

Only Hasbro figuresI pick up anymore are the Comic Marvel Legends. I had been getting Joe Classifieds and Lightning Collection, but either the figures were super tough to find (if at all) and/or I decided there just wasn't enough of an emotional investment for me to carry on. So I struck them from my list and sold off what I had already gotten.

I'm in the same boat with Marvel Legends, I'm down to comic boom looks only and limiting myself to one version of a character. The GI Joe Classified line I have only gotten the characters I really like. Snake Eyes was my main want from that line and after months of fruitless hunting, checking Amazon.com to see if I could score one for retail and watching the figure go up in price, I managed to score the Deluxe version in the Hasbro Pulse restock. I ordered the Storm Shadow from Amazon and after months of delay and having to confirm that I still wanted the figure, it was finally delivered. I ordered a Red Ninja from BBTS after failed attempts to get it anywhere. The only other I want is Firefly and well let's see how that goes. So between the exclusives, bad distribution and scalpers getting worse I'm collecting less and less.

When I was collecting the 4" stuff I would buy anything. Black Series, it has to be a character I really like or has a design that I find very appealing.

The only Black Series I ever bought was a 6" Jyn Erso. Outside of that, I guess I stopped collecting Star Wars just before Black Series started up.

Before that, there was a time I was all about anything Prequel Trilogy and especially Clone Wars.

I've been buying so few Black Series figures, anyway, because of "Shiny Head Syndrome." Unless a figure is a must-have like Lobot or Shae Vizla or Mara Jade or somebody, I'm likely gonna pass.

Not really good news but it was a matter of time, I guess. I mostly collect both Marvel Legends and Black Series and for a while now I have been cherry picking, most probably I'll cherry pick even more.
