Inspired by the 1978 Sugar-Free Bubble Gum Wrappers, Topps is pre-selling
2017 Topps Star Wars Trading Cards Collector Box; each box will include a 49-card complete set, three to five parallel cards, and two autographs (including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and more) for $99.99. The boxes will begin shipping March 8.
"
The original Topps Star Wars Sugar-Free trading cards set was produced in 1978. The reason for the sugar-free gum – as stories have been told – was that George Lucas wanted diabetics to also enjoy the gum found in Topps trading card packs, so he urged Topps to create a product that contained sugar-free gum.
However, instead of trading cards, the product contained 56 different Star Wars-themed wrappers, which are popular among Star Wars collectors today.
This is the first time Topps is recreating the wrappers as physical trading cards and packaging them all in one box for Star Wars fans. While fans will get the full base set in one box, there are parallels available for them to collect: Blue (numbered to 75), Green (numbered to 40), Gold (numbered to 10), and Red (1-of-1). Each box will have anywhere from three to five parallels."
