Review: Hasbro's Star Wars Deluxe AT-AT Vehicle

By Jay Cochran on 2010-07-06 in Features
Hasbro outdid themselves with this very cool new Star Wars AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) toy hitting retail shelves across the country any day. Updating the classic toy from Kenner, this new version of the AT-AT is over 2 feet tall, nearly 28 inches long, and 12 inches wide.

Similar to the original AT-AT toy, the legs are articulated. However, the legs on the new toy are very sturdy with tight joints, making it far less likely to fall over – something I would not have expected from such a big toy.

The vehicle can hold up to 20 of your Star Wars figures with six in the head alone. It has electronic lights and sounds from “The Empire Strikes Back,” including the voices of characters such as Darth Vader.

Panels on the body open on both sides allowing you to place your figures in the command center of the vehicle. You also will find working zip-lines on each side that allow figures to drop to the ground to begin their assault. A trap door on the belly of the beast opens and has a zip-line that you can pull down as well. These features allow you to re-enact the scene from “Empire Strikes Back” where Luke cuts open the AT-AT with his lightsaber and tosses a bomb inside to take down the vehicle.

The back of the AT-AT opens and has a button you can push to pop out an arctic Speeder Bike. This wasn’t anything that actually appeared in the movies; just another feature to add to the playability of this toy.

On the top of the AT-AT, a handle can be pulled out and used to move the head from left to right and up and down. The handle also has two cannons on it making it appear as if it’s added weaponry for the Imperials. If you don’t want the handle to be seen, you can push it down to hide it.

You will find the traditional two side-cannons with firing missiles that really work on the head, along with the chin-guns you can move back and forth while red lights flash and firing lasers sound.

The AT-AT includes the before mentioned Arctic Speeder Bike and one well-articulated figure (AT-AT driver able to stand or sit in the cockpit) and retails for $99.99. It should be out by the first of August.

I personally believe this is one of the coolest Star Wars toys Hasbro has made in a long time. It will fit great in any collector’s or kid’s collection. It’s well made, sturdy, and full of tons of cool features. It takes about 10 minutes to put together once you get it out of the box, and it is dead-on to its movie counterpart. The only downside I can see to it is size. For those short on space, trying to find someplace to display or store it may be a challenge, but in the end I think you will find it’s worth making room for.
