A Second Chance For The Cancelled Darth Maul Game?

By Bespin refugee on 2015-10-27 in Games
Update: In a recent Reddit AMA, Red Fly Studio CEO and owner Dan Borth says
they are 'currently working on a "full, next-gen demo of all things Maul' to present to EA. "...you would play as a young Maul, aged 9 or 11; the story would lead up to directly before the events of Episode 1. ...We wanted to show what he went through to become a Sith. Showcase the torture the Emperor put him through," he said. "Show how you as the player would have made the same mistakes and ended up a Sith."

If EA is not interested in a Darth Maul game, they're hoping "...EA will see the value in us reskinning our combat mechanic to be more in line with what they are thinking for Star Wars"

In 2010, game developer Red Fly, responsible for the Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, was tapped to create a Darth Maul game. Later that year, their work was derailed, as the game was reformatted, per Lucas' request, into a 'buddy cop-like experience', pairing Darth Maul with Darth Talon, two characters separated by more than 170 year in the Expanded Universe. This was followed by an attempted buyout by LucasArts, and, finaly, the cancellation of the project around June 2011, Here is a look at what might have been.

With how well the Force Unleashed games were done, I think this could have been an awesome game.

The first game was awesome...the second game was terrible. Cant help but think that this would have just been more of the same. I mean, sometimes, more of the same is just what we want with video games, but TFU2 was just a poor showing. Poor story for the most part.

Shame it was canned

speaking of canned...or at least, poorly repackaged...

dumped to focus on Force Unleashed, Euphoria engine in tow. That's a shame to me. I get that SW has a larger fanbase, but at the time this Indy game was developed, it would have had a huge boost by coinciding with the release of the new movie. SW was pretty stagnant at that point: ROTS was 3 years gone by and Clone Wars toon hadnt debuted. Indy deserved better...the watered down Wii release sucked, save for the inclusion of Fate of Atlantis.

With how well the Force Unleashed games were done, I think this could have been an awesome game. I doubt it would have been 20 hours of fighting Mandalorians.. probably just a couple of levels of it.. I don't know why they needed to try to add Darth Talon, that's an off move. Shame it was canned, but I'm sure there will be something similar when Episode 7 comes out.. prob not Maul, but episode 7 related.

As much as I like Darth Maul as a character, I may be the only Star Wars fan in the world that thinks he should have stayed dead. To bring him back to life like they did in the graphic novels and subsequent Clone Wars episodes in my mind diminished the drama of having Obi-Wan killing him in the first place thereby avenging his master's death, all in the name of sensationalism. It just takes away so much of the impact of their duel on Naboo. Bah...

I thought Savage Opress was an okay way to fill the void left by Darth Maul and satisfy whatever "need" there was for that type of character, although it'd be nice if they *gasp* came up with a cool original character that didn't piggyback the success of others, i.e. Pre Visla, Savage Opress, Darth Malgus...the list goes on and on.

darth maul fighting a room of mandalore's...probably for 20 hrs. Well, that'll do for one large portion of SW "fans"
