Thoughts On The New "Force Unleashed" Game Demo

Jay Cochran - August 23, 2008
They say that good things come to those who wait, and for Star Wars fans that just may be the case with LucasArts’ upcoming “Force Unleashed” video game.

The game, which originally was announced over a year ago, has left many Star Wars fans eagerly awaiting its release. With only a few weeks until that day, Lucas has made a free downloadable demo version of the game available on Xbox Live and the Playstation network for people to get their first hands-on experience with the game.

Now, I have had high expectations for this game ever since that first preview trailer debuted showing Darth Vader’s “Secret Apprentice” pulling an Imperial Star Destroyer out of the sky with the Force, and after playing this new demo on the Xbox, I must say I was not left feeling disappointed.

Touting the new technologies of Digital Molecular Matter (by Pixelux Entertainment) and euphoria (by NaturalMotion LTD) for the first time together, you truly get a gaming experience that feels like you are a Jedi with Force powers. Maybe I’m just a bit sadistic, but I had fun sitting there and throwing poor Stormtroopers around the room with the force, then levitating them up to the ceiling and letting them fall.

Besides giving you the most realistic feeling of controlling the ways of the Force, I think this game also features great graphics and good game controls. By no means do I consider myself an expert gamer, but I had no problems mastering most of the moves your character can do with the joystick (though I’m still working on the Lightsaber toss). Another thing I think this game has going for it – a really well thought out storyline that takes place between the events of Episode III and Episode IV.

As for negatives, I really haven’t found any yet, though at the end of the demo you have to take on a AT-ST which was a little bit of a challenge. The power meter for the AT-ST was above it on the screen, and I could only see it when I jumped up in the air to attack its head. It took me awhile to figure out how to destroy it. For one thing, it was kind of odd that you have a character who can pull Tie Fighters out of the air but you can’t pick up this AT-ST with the Force. Granted you have to have some limitations or the game would be too easy, but it did seem a little odd.

Anyway, I can’t wait to get my hands on the full version of this game which will be released September 16, 2008 in the United States, September 17 in Southeast Asia and Australia, and September 19 in Europe. If you have access to Xbox Live or the Playstation Network for your PS3 and haven’t downloaded it yet, I highly recommend the free demo that is available now for this game.

For those of you who have played the demo, we would love to hear your thoughts on it below.
