NASA officials have agreed to jettison LUKE SYKWALKER's original Jedi lightsaber into space as part of STAR WARS' 30th anniversary celebrations.

The prop weapon will be handed over to the U.S. space agency by furry Star Wars character Chewbacca at Oakland Airport in California, from where it will be transported to NASA headquarters in Houston, Texas.

In October (07), the lightsabre will blast off into orbit with the space shuttle Discovery where astronauts will jettison it into space.

Luke Skywalker was played by Mark Hamill in the original Star Wars trilogy, the first film of which was released in 1977.
