Dark Horse Comics Issues Statement About Losing Star Wars License

By Jay Cochran on 2014-01-03 in Comics & Books
Dark Horse Comics founder Mike Richardson has issued a statement about the recent news that Marvel Comics will be taking over the Star Wars license in 2015:

"The End of an Era - All things come to pass. So too, do all licensed deals. I am sad to report that Disney, the new owner of Lucasfilm, has notified us here at Dark Horse of their intention to move the Star Wars publishing license to another of their recent acquisitions, Marvel Comics, beginning in 2015. This will end a partnership that has lasted more than two decades.

For those who are new to the industry, Dark Horse revolutionized the treatment of comics based on films. After a history of movie properties being poorly handled with little regard for execution and continuity, Dark Horse took a new approach, carefully choosing licenses and approaching them with excitement and creative energy. Our goal was to create sequels and prequels to the films we loved, paying careful attention to quality and detail, essentially treating those films as though they were our own. Star Wars has been the crown jewel of this approach. We began chasing the title as far back as 1989, and with the launch of Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy’s Dark Empire, a new era in comics was born. I’m not ashamed to admit that we were Star Wars geeks, and we have been determined to spare neither effort nor expense in the pursuit of excellence.

It is ironic that this announcement comes at a time when Dark Horse is experiencing its most successful year ever. For obvious reasons, we have prepared for this eventuality by finding new and exciting projects to place on our schedule for 2015 and beyond. Will they take the place of Star Wars? That’s a tall order, but we will do our best to make that happen. In the meantime, 2014 may be our last year at the helm of the Star Wars comics franchise, but we plan to make it a memorable one. We know that fans of the franchise will expect no less. The Force is with us still."

- Mike Richardson

"Dark Horse revolutionized the treatment of comics based on films."

Damn right they did. Their work with Predator, Alien and Terminator in the early 90s was fantastic, and I have been pretty hip to their work on Star Wars.

I hope they go balls-crazy with their last year. You done good, Dark Horse. Take a bow.

I was never a fan of the marvel comics, didnt like a lot of the early DH stuff either, love a lot of the recent stuff so here's hoping they do it justice.

Everyone knew this would happen.

I would try to quell the negativity except for the fact that I really am not a fan of the Marvel Comics business practice right about now. If they make the SW books a cluster _______ of titles like they've done with Avengers and X-Men, then get ready for: Star Wars, New Star Wars, All New Star Wars, All New Star Wars NOW!, Dark Anakin, Boba Fett, Han Solo, Han Solo: Nerf Hearder, Yoda, Yoda: Jedi Master, Yoda and the Mediclorons, and no fewer than ten other books. All of which you have to read to get the full story. All of which will be renumbered after about 8 months.

@haha@ Yoda & the Mediclorians.....sounds like a band name.....

Well, that is the end of my comic buying then. I only get the omnibuses so unless they let DH continue to release those I'll just get the ones I don't have yet and then be done with it.

Ain't that the truth.

Now we are going to have cross over involving the dopey Marvel characters

They did a great job on the license...they even got me interested in Star Wars again!

I'll still continue to read their Conan books.

Thats sad.Darkhorse was there for them when Star wars was all but forgotten in the early 90's

The Great Purge has begun...all that kept SW alive in the dark period will be forgotten...and replaced with something worse, Im afraid

first the license, then the continuity...wipe them out...all of them...

FUGAYZIE - 2014-01-03 @ 7:59 pm

that sucks, but i saw it coming a mile away with Disney monopolizing everything. DH did a great job with it. i'm curious to see if marvel just follows DH lead or if they try to do something new.
