Review: Star Wars Legacy #45
For those of you not keeping up, Star Wars Legacy #45 takes place 137 years after the events of the “Battle of Yavin” and focuses on Luke Skywalker’s descendant Cade Skywalker.
In this issue, Darth Maladi is plotting to take control of the Sith and plans to use Cade to help her do it. Meanwhile the Galactic Alliance, the Jedi, and Roan Fel’s Imperials are planning a secret meeting to form an alliance against the Sith Imperials who have learned of this meeting and plan to attack it.
If you are just coming into this title for the first time, be warned there are a lot of players in this story – none of them familiar characters from the movie. That being said, every time I read one of these “Expanded Universe” titles, I am always amazed how regardless of how much things change, they always seem to be the same. The good of the Jedi battles to defeat the manipulations of the evil Sith, and no matter how many times one side seems to defeat the other, the cycle never seems to end.
This is the 3rd part of a continuing storyline so it may not be the best jumping on point for new readers, but writers John Ostrander and Jan Duursema do a good job keeping the action and suspense going throughout the issue. Even if you do not get who all the players are immediately, the basic concept of the story should seem pretty clear to Star Wars fans.
Jan Duursema also does the pencils for this issue and does a great job with the help of Dan Parsons’ inks creating the visuals that help keep the story moving along. The opening sequence with Maladi and Lord Nihl really pull you into the story right away. In my opinion, the colors on this issue are really breathtaking at times.
There are also some cool designs with things like futuristic looking Tie-Fighters in the hangers of the updated Star Destroyers that look more like bats hanging in wait than ships themselves – which is kind of cool and an interesting take on the classic lore we have come to expect from the Star Wars Universe.
If you are a Star Wars fan and want to see what the future is like for this Universe, then I would strongly suggest you start picking up this title if you haven’t been. If you have been reading this title, then I think you will find this issue does a great job of keeping the action and anticipation high and making you eagerly await the next issue to find out what happens. I give this one 4 (out of 5) Stars.
