Reader Review: 30th Anniversary 'ANH Duel' Darth Vader By Whitewolf

By Bespin refugee on 2007-06-22 in Reviews
There's not much to say about this version of Darth Vader that hasn't been said before...mainly because this figure is nothing but yet another in a never-ending line of Vader repacks. He's seen duty in the ROTS line, TSC line, the ANH Collector's Tin, and now the TAC line. He's the Jedi Starfighter of action figures, it would seem...

Not that this Vader is a bad figure...far from it. It's just that everyone probably has this version of Vader in their collections already. Not like there were plenty of chances in the past 2 years to get one! This figure features 8 ball-socket joints (shoulders, elbows, knees and ankles), 3 swivel joints (neck and both wrists), and 3 straight-cut joints in the torso and hips. This means that the Dark Lord can bust a move in practically any situation you pose him in.

The paint app is scarce compared to other figures...considering Vader is primarily all in black. His armored shoulders and upper torso armor have a dark silver-black color and the respirator box is painted with all the correct red, green and blue lights and switches. I can't really comment on too much more here...

Vader's helmet is removable, revealing the young Hayden Christiansen version of Vader underneath. The Evolutions Vader featured the older Sabastian Shaw head, which is what I would have thought we'd get on this figure...considering that Vader is reenacting a scene from ANH. Social Security Vader versus Oldbi-Wan Kenobi. Oh well...

Unfortunately, the highlight of this figure is the main accessory...a huge, brown Kenobi puddle. Kenobi's robes and lightsaber hilt are a solid molded plastic piece with a well-hidden foot peg in the middle of it for Vader to stamp his foot on. The neat thing about the robes is that you can actually tell where the arms and hood are. Beyond being a makeshift figure stand, it really serves no other purpose.

Darth Vader includes:

*Removable Helmet
*Lightsaber
*Obi-Wan's Jedi Knight Robes
*Collector's Coin #16

In conclusion, I'm middle of the road about this figure. I honestly think I have more Vaders in my collection than I have Stormtroopers! Hasbro's regurgitation machine is in full effect with this character. Like I said earlier, the figure itself is an awesome one...but I'm just kind of sick of seeing the same figure reused in such short a time.

I give Darth Vader 3 Death Stars.
