Star Wars: A New Hope’s 50th Anniversary Gets the IMAX Treatment, Joining Starfighter

As Star Wars: A New Hope celebrates its monumental 50th anniversary in 2027, Lucasfilm is planning a double dose of Star Wars spectacle. The original classic will return to theaters in a newly restored presentation—and it will share the IMAX spotlight with the highly anticipated new adventure Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy.

The celebration begins February 19, 2027, when A New Hope returns to theaters and, for the first time ever, lands on IMAX screens. Lucasfilm says the newly restored version will play at select IMAX 70mm film locations, alongside a limited theatrical run at select cinemas.

Then, just a few months later, audiences will get a brand-new chapter in the Star Wars universe. Starfighter is set to blast into theaters May 28, 2027, and the film was reportedly shot specifically with an IMAX presentation in mind. Production used IMAX-certified film cameras, with footage converted to IMAX 70mm prints for screenings at select IMAX film locations.

Starfighter puts Gosling in the role of a “cynical rogue” and introduces a fresh standalone story to the legendary franchise. Joining Gosling is an impressive ensemble that includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams.
