Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu: Box Office Breakdown

By Shawn Kirk on 2026-05-25 in Movie & TV
By the end of the Memorial Day weekend in the U.S., Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to reach about $165 million worldwide, including $102 million domestically and $63 million internationally over the four-day frame. Although it comfortably won the weekend, its opening came in just below Solo: A Star Wars Story, which had previously posted the lowest debut of any Disney-era Star Wars film. That has led some to call it a flop—but the numbers suggest a more nuanced picture.

Below is a look at every theatrical Star Wars release since Disney acquired Lucasfilm (ranked by domestic opening).

The Force Awakens (2015)
Domestic 3-Day Opening - $247.9 Million
Lifetime Global Box Office - $2.07 Billion
Approx. Production Budget - $245 Million

The Last Jedi (2017)
Domestic 3-Day Opening - $220 Million
Lifetime Global Box Office - $1.33 Billion
Approx. Production Budget - $317 Million

The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Domestic 3-Day Opening - $177.4 Million
Lifetime Global Box Office - $1.08 Billion
Approx. Production Budget - $275 Million

Rogue One (2016)
Domestic 3-Day Opening - $155.1 Million
Lifetime Global Box Office - $1.06 Billion
Approx. Production Budget - $200 Million

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Domestic 3-Day Opening - $84.4 Million
Lifetime Global Box Office - $392.9 Million
Approx. Production Budget - $300 Million

The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)
Domestic 3-Day Opening - $82 Million
Lifetime Global Box Office* - $165 Million (*Global Opening)
Approx. Production Budget - $165 Million

Unlike Solo—still the franchise’s clearest box office disappointment—The Mandalorian and Grogu carries a much lower production budget at $165 million. With a global holiday opening matching that figure, the film appears well positioned to become financially successful. Reviews from critics were mixed, with a 62% Rotten Tomatoes score, but audience reception has been much stronger, including an 89% audience score and an “A-” CinemaScore. Its broad, multigenerational appeal should also help sustain box office momentum through the summer.

The film also has stronger merchandising potential than Solo. It is a more marketable brand overall and could continue generating revenue through Halloween and the December holiday season. In the end, that broader commercial performance may be the clearest measure of its success within the Star Wars franchise.
