George Lucas Receives Honorary Saturn Award

George Lucas received the Dr. Donald A. Reed Founder’s Award at the 53rd Annual Saturn Awards. The legendary Star Wars creator was given this special honorary award for his pioneering contributions to genre entertainment and cinema. Longtime collaborator Mark Hamill made a surprise appearance to present the award, stating it is "impossible to overstate George's contribution to the industry".

Keeping his speech brief (at his wife's request), Lucas joked about the difficulty of building the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, comparing the process to "making a movie, only worse". During the speech, Tom Cruise (who won Best Actor for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning) shouted from the audience, "We thank you, George!".

While the 2026 honor was a lifetime achievement award, Lucas has won several competitive Saturn Awards in the past. He won both Best Director and Best Writing for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

The night was a major success for the Star Wars franchise in general as the series Andor won three awards, including Best Science Fiction Television Series and Best Actor for Diego Luna.
