It's not as black and white as you present it. But I understand people have strong views.

I'm sorry for the people who liked this. But it wasn't surprising that it was cancelled. It probably only had one season in it even without the toxic trolls, but I think Ms. Headland tried a risky approach to promoting the series.

I didn't even like the show, but I can still recognize that it was getting getting a lot of **** that was unwarranted, toxic, problematic, or whatever one wants to call it.BTW, that's the second time you said she promoted the series in a risky way. How exactly?

The interesting thing is lots of beloved shows had shaky first seasons. Disney gave on it before it had a chance. One could present it was because of the make up of the show that it got tanked. Lots of shows with different make up (read: primarily white casts) have chances to find their footing.

Lately, streaming services have become quicker with the hook. And Disney in particular is being very cheap right now. To be honest, in Disney's current financial climate, I'm actually kind of surprised shows like this got made. They had retrenched into making and supporting only guaranteed hits (Mando and stuff with Clone Wars roots). We will see how patient they are with some of the new stuff announced this year.

If I'm in error, so be it. And I know people troll for this kind of stuff. But Ms. Headland said a great more than that and she said it almost as soon as the show was announced. She marketed her vision in a particular way. That's her right. But it's also risky and not just because it wakes up trolls.

It was said in response to people who went there. You putting more stock in the reaction than the initial offending action(s). She was hired to make Star Wars...which in and of itself is a vast universe with enough for everyone.

Yes, she did say more than that. She also made comments about toxic fandom in late 2023. Online harassment of certain cast members began almost immediately after casting announcements earlier in the year. Prior to her comments about toxic fandom she spoke proudly about the diversity of the cast and characters. Great. I don't see a problem. You know who has a problem with diversity? Bigots.

People who hate seeing diversity on their screens don't need an invitation to do so. And I think you're the one who's mistaken. There was already widespread racist and misognyistic online harassment directed at members of the cast that went on for months before Leslye Headland said that she doesn't consider people who call themselves Star Wars fans but engage in hate speech, racism, and bigotry to actually be fans. Did it piss them off? Sure. Did she start it? Only in the sense that she cast women and people of color as leads in the first place.

I think you're mistaken about who started the discussions around Acolyte, but this will just totally derail the thread and get into stuff I don't like discussing. I will just repeat that Acolyte deliberately sought a certain type of attention and that's a bit of a gamble, and this is the result. It didn't have to market itself the way it did.

We're good and I'm glad we can talk (not trying to take it there either). I'll say...Acolyte just wanted to exist. History has shown (YouTube even justifies this) there is a enclave of people who are literally threatened by anyone other than a white male being the focus.

The show was marketed to Star Wars fans....who returned the favor by swearing it was everything but. They made it "political" by putting their divisive politics in it.

White males aren't the only SW fans that exist and everyone should be able to see someone they identify with portrayed. Acting like their inclusion is in some way sinister or part of a agenda is laughable and sadly disturbing.

Again there are valid criticisms that can be presented....but couching it between bigotry and RW talking points derails the sincerity of said criticisms. They killed Acolyte just like they killed the originally planned yearly SW film releases.
