James Earl Jones Retires From Voicing Darth Vader?

By Bespin refugee on 2022-09-23 in Movie & TV
Lucasfilm sound editor Matthew Woods tells Vanity Fair that James Earl Jones has given Lucasfilm his blessing to use AI to recreate his iconic voice for any future uses, as well as acting as an advisor. Apparently Jones' last actual performance as Vader was in Rise of Skywalker, with Vader's dialogue in the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series created by Respeecher software. At 91, Jones said, "He was looking into winding down this particular character".

JEJ will always be thought of when it comes to the voice of Vader but there has been many who have copied the voice and with a little auto-tune/audio magic, it sounds perfect. I mean JEJ didn't do the voice of Vader for ever Star Wars video game that came out and used Vader in it.

Okay, that's pretty impressive for AI. But wow I had no idea he was 91

I was genuinely convinced James Earl Jones was recording dialogue for the Obi-Wan show and that they were using AI just to make him sound younger. It was no where near as flat as Luke Skywalker in Mandalorian/BOBF. In fact, there was quite a good bit of range to that artificial performance. They figured out how to get Respeacher to act. Kinda freaky.
