During The Walt Disney Co.’s quarterly earnings call, CEO Bob Iger gave an update on the next few films in the
Star Wars franchise;
Episode 8, scheduled for release in December 2017, has now begun filming. He says production has also begun on 2019's
Episode 9. Iger also says, “Filming of Rogue One is virtually completed and we absolutely love what we’ve seen so far,” preproduction has already begun on the next standalone film for 2018, focusing on a young Han Solo. Ground will also be broken later this year on new
Star Wars attractions at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, and Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
Rogue One, a heist story about the Rebels stealing the plans for the Death Star, is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), will be released Dec. 16, 2016.
Episode 8, directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper), will be released December 2017.
The 'Young Han Solo' standalone, directed The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street's Phil Lord and Chris Miller, based on a script by Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan. is currently scheduled for May 2018.
Episode 9, directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World, Safety Not Guaranteed), is scheduled for 2019.
