Hoth Turret and Dish Cannon by

Got myself a 6" Hoth Rebel Trooper, and soon enough, the idea to build the Golan Arms DF.9 turret came to my mind.....So made a trip to Daiso (my favourite dollar store) for the first time since re-opening and looked for suitable items to create the base structure....So what I found was basically a plastic waste bin and 2 plates to form the shape and structure....and after some scratchbuilding work with 1mm PVC board, the turret is almost done!....Need to do more detailing but I cant wait to start weathering this!...
I was about to throw away the lid of the waste bin when I noticed that the lid has a slight concave and then it struck me...I can build the 1.4 FD P-Tower (I call it the Radar Dish cannon) out of it too!....Quick check on the diameter and it seems about right.....So I started cutting off the lip of the lid, and cut out a round 1mm PVC to form the slightly conical shape to attach to the back of the dish.....Then I started cutting out small pieces of 1mm PVC board to create all the details on the front of the dish and then worked my way down to form the main body.....It is not exactly identical as the reference photos but I'm pretty happy to get the resemblance so far.....Now, I need to find something to use as the round platform for this cannon....Off to the dollar store!...
Painting and weathering almost done but I still have a few more detailing to add on....Also detailed the interior of the compartment which will have a power cable plugged into it....Making those power panel patterns on the radar dish out of vinyl decal was quite tedious but I'm happy how it turned out....
As mentioned before, my Hoth Dish cannon is slightly under-scaled and not tall enough for my Hoth trooper to hold the controls and look at the display properly.....So I had to raise the cannon higher to make it taller....In order to do this but not add on a thicker base, I used two container lids as risers attached on a piece of PVC board and used plastercine to form sloping sides......then I slapped on lots of wall putty as snow over the sloped surfaces, so it seems like the cannon is sitting on a mound of snow and gives the needed height to pose my trooper properly....Still a bit more touch up to do...Will take nice photos with the turret once fully completed....
Thought of sharing one of my methods to replicate the hoses and cables, but also make them poseable....I usually use faulty charging cables for my 'hoses' but these cables are usually not poseable and look unnatural as it is difficult to make them sit flat on the ground with natural curves.....So what I did was to remove the thin internal wires leaving just the cable sleeve....Then I inserted a thin poseable wire inside thus making the 'hose' poseable.....This greatly improves the look of the hoses giving them a sense of weight....Great for making dangling hoses for your dioramas too.....And don't throw the thin internal wires away!....They will come in handy for future detailing....Hope this tip is useful.....😁
Added the final touches to the scratchbuilt Hoth Dish cannon....The more accurate looking viewing/aiming thingy where the trooper looks into is made out of a Bandai astromech leg part....Now, I can call this one done! 😀"
