This week's custom is a Driveable TIE Fighter by Allan Carver
Home built tie fighter made from upcycled electric wheel chair motors. Top speed is 6 mph. Awesomeness and fun... unlimited.
FAQ:
Q: Why?
A: Why not.
Q: That's not Darth Vader's Tie Fighter!?!
A: No, it's not. When I made the video, I did not own a Tie Fighter Pilot helmet. I DID own a Darth Vader helmet. So I went with what I had.
Q: Why didn't you make Darth Vader's Advanced Tie?
A: It would've been too big to fit into my shop, which is small.
Q: What is it made from?
A: Steel frame covered with two kinds of foam. L200 for the body and rigid 2" thick insulation foam for the wings.
Q: How do you drive it?
A: It's remote controlled using a Sabertooth dual-motor driver. FYI, use the aileron and elevator pins.
Q: What did you use for reference?
A: I used a 70s Kenner toy for the wings and control pod scale, but I adjusted the width so it will fit through a set of double doors. For the back of the tie fighter, I used the toy shown in this video. It was much cleaner than the original Kenner tie fighter.
Q: What scale is this?
A: After measuring tie fighter and pilot height from the movies, it's roughly one third the scale of a real tie fighter as depicted in the movies.
Q: Are those car batteries?
A: No, they're wheelchair deep-cycle batteries scavenged from the crapped-out donor wheelchair.
Q: Does it have sound?
A: Yes, it has the Empire theme and Tie Fighter sound effects loaded onto a sound board and pumped through a 30-watt amplifier. The thing dangling underneath is the PA speaker.
Q: What's next?
A: The plan is to build an electric Batmobile go kart, the Art Deco-mobile from the 90s animated series.
