Celebration IV Exclusive McQuarrie Concept R2-D2 & C-3PO Figures Found At Five Below

Jay Cochran - March 14, 2014

Imperial Holocron reports that Hasbro's Celebration IV Exclusive McQuarrie Concept R2-D2 & C-3PO figure 2-pack has started showing up at the Five Below Discount stores for only $5. The one shown below was discovered in Northern PA. I remember seeing platelets full of these figures on the last day of the convention so it really doesn't surprise me that these have finally made their way to a discount chain for clearance. There was probably some kind of exclusive clause in place where Hasbro could not resell the figures anywhere else for a certain period of time which is likely why we are just now seeing these. Celebration IV took place in the summer of 2007.

We actually talked with the folks at Celebration IV back in 2007 about these figures. Originally they told us any unsold merchandise would be destroyed, however later we learned that wasn't true as etailer Toy Rocket ended up buying some of that merchandise. Check out our video below to see all the unsold figures that were in the background when we did our interview.

That's because when designing the early Threepio character, Lucas had McQuarrie start with " a male version of the robot from Metropolis."

Proto-3PO here is just the Robot Maria design without boobs.

That shows that these weren't "Destroyed" as Hasbro said...

That C3P0 reminds me of that old Fritz Lang movie poster. Glad I got mine for free, I'm keeping that one MIB.
