If everything is done ahead of time, what's the point for the rest of us to watch?

Well other than for the fairly obvious reasons (target needs to be home, needs to be watching RAW, needs to be eligible for the competition to begin with) it should be very very similiar to stuff like radio contests.

Every caller needs pre-screening or you dont know what they're going to do when their live on the air. The last thing WWE needs is some fan with a potty mouth on live television. I believe when the WWE staff contact a winner the promise of "watch RAW, answer the phone and you'll win lots of money" keeps potential deviants in-tact. If Vince announces you only one $2 live, his production staff can cut the poor guy/girl off before any embarassing things are said live.

I think the radio does this too (anyone who works in that industry can confirm). It's during the songs that they take callers, screen em for the answer to the contest and record the conversation. When they're back live they play back the conversation like it was live no?

Some stations do that. It depends on the program and time of the day. Most likely the bigger stations will record it and edit it before playing it back. Most stations though just have one person working and don't have enough time or hands to do full editing and get it on the air on time.

It depends on the time of the day too. During the day there are more people working in a station and one could be on air taking calls while someone else does the editing and one is actually on the air.

My best friend works at the local station and I hang out there alot.

I'm sure live TV is quit a bit diferent from live radio too.

hypothetical:

3:00 PM - Vince: "Ok production staff, to the next order of business for tonight's show, do we have a list of random fans to call tonight for the Million Dollar Mania?"

3:01 PM - Production Coordinator: "Yup right here, we'll pre-screen and prep 'em before the show starts."

***

7:30 PM - Production Coordinator: "k let's start calling these guys to let them know they will be winning some money tonight and that they should keep their phone-lines free and plug RAW when Vince asks them what they like to watch!"

8:05 PM - Production Coordinator: "alright the winners are ready and prepped - run this list over to the graphics department let them start plugging in the names and hometowns in the same order and send a copy to Vince"

8:30 PM - Graphics Team: "everything enetered and sent to the production truck"

9:00 PM - show starts

***

Jericho talks smack, Trips comes out to talk smack, JBL comes out to talk more smack, HBK arrives for some smack talking and no wresting occurs for the first 30 minutes of the show.

***

Million Dollar Mania time

***

9:35 PM - Security guy hands Vince the first name and he dails the winner

9:35:49 PM - Production Coordinator: Roll the credit as soon as Vince confirms the name live

9:35:54 PM - Guy in truck: Done!

Viola!!!

It's sad that you had to spell this out by the numbers for some people. @loll@

Well, this is how.

They have the info on who is going to be called, name & location, right. They prepare the graphics before they go on the air so they are ready when the calls are made. Even if they weren't pre-calling people to make sure they'll be by their phones, they'd still have the info & the order the calls were going to be made. Or at the very least, they'd be informed of who's being called that night & then informed again when it's time for the call to be made by someone (if nothing else, the guy who's bringing the cards out to Vince) as to which of the names on the list for the night is being called. They can then pop the prepped graphic up on screen when it's time. Believe me, this is how it works. I mean, it's not like they don't know which one's they're calling on a given night. They've got the fancy cards printed up. Plus, it's not like it takes that long to type the info into the screen graphic. Even if they were doing a random draw live, they obviously do it backstage & write the info down for Vince. They'd just need to relay the info to the truck for input into the already created graphic. Very quick & easy to do. I know.

And nobody is understanding what I'm saying. Yes,it's on the paper but how are the ones working in the back who put this stuff up on the screen knowing what's on the paper? All I'm saying is it seems just a little bit fishy.

Bandalero - 2008-06-18 @ 4:39 pm

Of course their name and homestate appear as soon as Vince says hello because duh - he has a phone number, he knows who he is calling. People who entered the contest had to put their number and other personal information in to qualify.

It's not a random phone dialer.
