As Rey meets her hero in Luke Skywalker, the meeting may not go as she expects. As seen in the teaser trailer, this is a broken man, who tell her it is time for the Jedi to end. What has brought Luke to this point? Hamill says he struggled with it, but says,"If there are going to be more stories, there has to be conflict, trauma, scars. A hero canít still be the same triumphant figure he was decades before."
'Hamill hints that Luke has begun to doubt his own connection to the Force, wondering if he has been misreading it all this time.
ď[Luke] made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character,Ē Hamill says. ďAnd he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that. Thatís the primary obstacle he has to rejoining the world and his place in the Jedi hierarchy, you know? Itís that guilt, that feeling that itís his fault, that he didnít detect the darkness in him until it was too late.Ē'
